of Warmia and Mazury, Poland

We applied for and were selected for the Erasmus+ Staff Mobility for Teaching exchange programme to interact with the faculty and students of the Institute of Journalism and Social Communication at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, Poland in December, 2018.

Under this programme, we were expected to lecture for eight hours in total to students undertaking degrees in both Bachelor and Master in media and journalism. This also included an open lecture for the university on ‘Introduction to Bhutan and Bhutanese Media’ which was attended by a large body of faculty and students.

This was an immensely enriching experience for us both professionally and culturally. What impressed us about the department of Media and Journalism was the focus placed on practical learning and how well the department was equipped to accomplish that. Interestingly, our teaching-learning experience with the students was not very different from the kind we have at Royal Thimphu College. In some classes the students were interactive and very curious about Bhutan, and in other classes the students were quieter but attentive. From our classroom interactions with the students, what clearly stood out was an interest in Bhutan and an eagerness to explore possibilities of studying in Bhutan. The faculty we met were also enthusiastic to collaborate on possible projects, strengthening the ties formed between Royal Thimphu College and the University of Warmia and Mazury.

Our visit was wholesome mainly of Warmia and Mazury, Polandbecause of the thoughtfulness and generosity of Dr. Szymon Zylinski who ensured our immersion in Polish hospitality and culture. The schedule planned afforded us an opportunity to explore Warsaw, Olsztyn and its surroundings.

The Erasmus+ programme has definitely enriched us by giving the opportunity to experience teaching in a foreign environment and inspiring us to collaborate with our counterparts at the University of Warmia and Mazury in various capacities such as research and student exchange. We are also grateful to this programme for making it possible for us to meet new people and explore new places and culture.
